CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Atrium Health’s Carolinas Medical Center was again recognized as the “Best Hospital” in the Charlotte Metro region by U.S. News & World Report’s annual hospital rankings and for the second consecutive year orthopedics was ranked among the top 50 programs in the nation. Carolinas Medical Center was also recognized for high-performing programs in Cancer, Gastroenterology & GI surgery, Neurology & Neurosurgery, Pulmonology and Urology. In June, Levine Children’s Hospital was also ranked by among the Top 50 children’s hospitals by U.S. News & World Report.

“We are honored to once again be nationally recognized as the best hospital in Charlotte,” Carolinas Medical Center chief medical officer Gary Little, MD, said. “In a growing community, our world-class team of more than 1,100 providers is dedicated to providing the best clinical programs to our patients and this a reflection of their commitment and skill.”

The annual U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals rankings are designed to help guide patients to the best medical care available in the country and evaluate more than 4,500 medical centers nationwide. Carolinas Medical Center offers the region’s only Level I Trauma Center, providing the highest level of comprehensive care with the ability to respond around-the-clock to help critically injured patients on the ground or by air transport. The facility also serves as the only transplant center in the region. Additionally, skilled surgery teams operate on the most complex cases, performing more than 40,000 cases annually.

“These rankings reflect the musculoskeletal teams’ incredible dedication to exceptional patient care. Thanks to our nationally recognized physicians, advanced care practitioners, nurses and therapists, we have the unique ability to offer robust specialty care to patients, regardless of where they live,” said Claude T. Moorman, MD, president of Atrium Health’s Musculoskeletal Institute and The Edward N. Hanley, Jr. Endowed Chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. “We are also committed to bringing the latest and greatest research innovations to the community.”

Atrium Health’s Musculoskeletal Institute consists of nationally recognized providers who perform advanced procedures across the system bringing together services for orthopedics, sports medicine, rehabilitation and spine for the benefit of education, research and patient care. The program also features one of the top residency programs in the country, offering world-class training through a hands-on approach. The residency education and training program has long been a combined effort of Atrium Health’s department of orthopedic surgery, OrthoCarolina and Carolina Neurosurgery and Spine Associates.

“Our orthopedic partners in the community, nursing and quality improvement teams and many others at Atrium Health will continue to be instrumental in helping us lead the way in orthopedic care,” Moorman said. “Our work through an accomplished network of physicians across the region will continue to elevate care across multiple counties.”

The musculoskeletal team leads the way in limb-lengthening surgeries, uses the latest technology to treat and preserve function for orthopedic oncology patients and creates new standards of care through the Carolinas Trauma Network Research Center of Excellence.

“For nearly three decades, we’ve strived to make hospital quality more transparent to healthcare consumers nationwide,” said Ben Harder, managing editor and chief of health analysis at U.S. News. “By providing the most comprehensive data available, we give patients and their physicians’ information to support their search for the best care across a range of specialties.”

In the 16 specialty areas, 158 hospitals were ranked in at least one specialty. In rankings by state and metro area, U.S. News recognized hospitals as high performing across multiple areas of care. The rankings methodology considers patient experience, safety and quality, among other care-related factors. For a list of the national rankings, visit Best Hospitals.
