Gray Stone Day School and Mu Alpha Theta, the math club, hosted a Math 24 Tournament on March 14 at Pfeiffer University.
Students from many area middle schools were invited to participate. Students from Albemarle Middle School, Stanfield Elementary School, Mt. Pleasant Middle School, C.C. Griffin Middle School and Kannapolis Middle School attended.
Math 24 is a mental math competition where students must use their problem solving skills, pattern sensing and concentration. They may not use calculators.
“This year competition was very rigorous and the final round was very exciting,” said Helen Nance, chief administrator at the school.
Each school was allowed to send 10 students to compete on an individual level. Some schools held a local competition to see who would be able to attend. Each contestant received a T-shirt to commemorate the event. Those not making the semi-final round were taken on a tour of Pfeiffer University.
The final round is made up of the four contestants with the highest scores at the end of the regular competition. Gregg McCollister, math instructor and advisor to the Mu Alpha Theta Club that sponsored the event, said, “The high school students and the middle school students, alike, had a wonderful time. The math club members acted as judges and facilitators as the younger students competed in each fast-paced round.”
Colton Redmond, a sixth grader from Mt. Pleasant Middle School, was the champion. Donald Horn, a seventh grader from Mt. Pleasant Middle School, Hannah Love, an eighth grader from Kannapolis Middle School and Tamara Mamulashvili, an eighth grader from C.C. Griffin, were the finalists.
McCollister informed the crowd that the competition would be held again next year in March. Gray Stone Day School will send out postcards in the fall so everyone could begin practicing their mental math.
