More than 150 high school student athletes from the Stanly County Schools recently participated in free speed, agility and plyometric clinics provided by Stanly Regional Medical Center’s Sports Medicine Program.
The clinics covered various components of speed, agility, plyometrics and conditioning and were offered at Albemarle, North Stanly, South Stanly and West Stanly during the week of July 14-17. Scott Brone, a certified strength and conditioning specialist, licensed physical therapist and Stanly Regional’s Sports Medicine coordinator, led the four sessions.
Plyometrics is a type of exercise training designed to produce fast, powerful movements, and improve the functions of the nervous system, generally for the purpose of improving performance in a specific sport.
“The speed and agility training sessions provided by Scott Brone and the sports medicine staff at Stanly Regional Medical Center were excellent learning and motivational opportunities for our students and teacher/coaches,” said Charlie Phillips, Stanly County Schools director of athletics. “We are fortunate to be able to offer such programs to our students and are grateful to Stanly Regional, Scott and the sports medicine staff for their commitment to Stanly County and its students.”
