Vocational Rehabilitation recognizes employers, who work with mentally, physically disabled inviduals

Sunday, November 16, 2008 — Vocational Rehabilitation Services in Stanly County conducted an Employer Appreciation Day Oct. 30 as a way to say thank-you to their employers for their hard work and dedication to individuals with mental and physical disabilities in the workforce.

“This is our way of saying thank-you,” Unit Manager Mary Walls said.

“We always try to provide you with a qualified individual.”

The event was also in recognition of National Disability Employee Awareness Month.

Partners with Stanly County JobLink Career Cen-ter, Vocational Rehabilita-tion Services focuses on assisting persons with disabilities to obtain and maintain employment. If qualified, individuals go through counseling, evaluations, training and education, depending on what field of work they go into. Once placed into a job, individuals must maintain their job for at least 90 days.

Kent Millsaps, assistant regional director for Vocational Rehabilitation Services, reported that the Albemarle unit set a goal for placing 151 people into jobs with all of them maintaining employment for 90 days. Not only did Albemarle meet their goal, 152 were placed in jobs and all of them maintained employment for the correct length of time.

North Carolina placed 6,441 people in jobs and all maintained employment for 90 days or more.

Josh Heaberin from Wal-greens in Albemarle presented a video on the Anderson County, S.C. Walgreens Dis-tribution Center. Walgreens has been a major supporter of Vocational Rehabilitation Services for years. The company focuses primarily on hiring those with cognitive disabilities.

“We found that if you set high standards, they will perform,” Heaberin said.

“With education, we can come to an understanding in how we can work with people with disabilities.”

Kelley Bigger from Stanly County Family YMCA received an award for being an individual who has worked well with Vocational Rehabilitation Services.

“She has always been committed, cooperative and supportive of what we are doing and what we are trying to achieve,” Pinkie Furr, Vocational Rehabilitation business relations representative, said.

Justin Burr, N.C. House of Representative for District 67, also attended the event.

“You do great things and we appreciate it very much,” Burr said.

“I’m glad to be here.”

Nathan Sanges, Stanly County JobLink Center manager, spoke to employers and guests as well.

“We provide services to individuals to prepare them for the work world,” he said.

“Still, there is nothing in a caterpillar that tells you it’s going to be a butterfly.”
