SCPC observes 15 years of helping children

By Sarah Jane Rosser, Staff Writer

Tuesday, November 18, 2008 After 15 years of providing resources to parents and licensed day cares, the Stanly County Partnership for Children (SCPC) continues its mission: to make early childhood resources available to young children and their families that result in young children being properly cared for and enabled to enter school ready to learn.

Past and present Partnership board members joined at a regular board meeting Monday to celebrate SCPC’s 15th anniversary with a luncheon and entertainment provided by the Pre-K class at Countryside Kids Club.

Albemarle City Councilwoman Martha Sue Hall led the group in an invocation as well as a moment of silence to observe the season of Thanksgiving.

Hall reminisced on the beginning of the program 15 years ago when she was a part of the first board of directors. She made reference to Jeff Plyler, the first chairman of the SCPC, and how she had no idea the program would still be here today.

“It’s good to be home,” Plyler said,”

“I can still remember when we got a postcard in the mail about this program coming to Stanly County. It was not only something that started and still continues today, but it was something for me personally.

“It has made me who I am today.”

Pamela Wright, the first executive director of SCPC, spoke on the tremendous opportunity it was for her to work with Stanly County several years ago.

She highlighted memories such as former Gov. Jim Hunt’s visit to the facility, finding a place for the educational resource center and working closely with the board of directors to make sure Stanly County children received the necessary resources to succeed when they entered kindergarten.

“It is because of my experience that I feel like I am a better person,” she said.

“Thank you for allowing me to share in this event.”

Another past executive director, Tim Moose, spoke as well, encouraging the present board of directors to keep up the good work.

“It really is very important what you do for kids these ages,” he said.

David Diggs, director and owner of Countryside Kids Club, presented the Pre-K class for entertainment. The children joined together to sing songs for the board of directors and special guests.

“This is such a great program,” Diggs said.

“Thank you for everything you do.”

SCPC Board Chairman Rev. Michael Scott gave closing remarks and showed his appreciation for all that has been accomplished.

“One thing that stands out to me is how this group of people from so many backgrounds can come together for the children,” he said.

He also complimented staff members who continue to be consistent and persistent in all they do.

Special guests also included Justin Burr, representative-elect for District 67. Sen. Bill Purcell and County Manager Andy Lucas were unable to attend but sent e-mails to convey their congratulations.

“I think it’s wonderful you are taking time to celebrate your accomplishments,” Lucas said.

“I look forward to working with the Stanly County Partnership for Children in the future to continue advocating for children in Stanly County.”

SCPC Executive Director Barbara Whitley said the partnership is today what they are because of Pamela Wright’s leadership.

“We do have a great staff and I’m just glad to be apart of it. I hope I can be around a lot longer.”

SCPC is an agency that provides educational resources to families with children from birth to 5 years old to prepare children for kindergarten. SCPC is in Stanly Commons on First Street in Albemarle across from Stanly Regional Medical Center.
