This Weekend in Stanly County October 5

By Bridget Huckabee for the SNAP

Wednesday, October 3, 2012 — October is a lovely month in Stanly County. Maples and dogwoods dress in glorious colors. Golden rod and yellow daisies wave along the highways. From the crest of Morrow Mountain one can watch the progression of autumn across the rolling hills and valleys of our beautiful countryside. The cooler weather draws us outdoors and here in our county we can find plenty there to enjoy.

Friday begins the 2-day Big Lick Truck and Tractor Pull at Big Lick Festival Park. This event takes place at 7 pm with gates opening at 5 pm on Friday and Saturday. There’s free parking with bleacher seating available, but if you want a comfortable seat, bring your own. You don’t want to miss the exciting pulling action as the best local and regional pullers compete for points.

On Saturday, God’s Country Outfitters will host an Outdoor Expo as a benefit for Hospice of Stanly County. This will take place at the new location of God’s Country Outfitters on Highway North 24/27. Enjoy activities for the whole family. There’ll be a championship truck and tractor pulling team, the country’s finest game call makers, Smokey the Bear, flint knappers, horse rides, face painting, search and rescue dogs, pottery, taxidermy and much more. And don’t forget the live and silent auctions.

The Stanly County Farmers’ Market is in full swing this Saturday from 8 am until noon at Market Station in downtown Albemarle. Fresh produce from local farmers fills the stalls and there are home baked goodies, crafts and plants to choose from. Watch for the market’s end-of-season Craft Fair, an event you don’t want to miss.

The Get Lost Corn Maze is a great way to spend a few hours with the family. Try to find your way through two miles of right and wrong paths in 2.5 acres of corn. New this year is the Straw Maze and don’t forget to browse the pumpkin patch and the sunflower patch. This all takes place on Saturday from 11 am until 6 pm at Muddy Boots Farm on North 73 Highway between Millingport and Mount Pleasant. The Corn Maze is also open on Sunday from 1 pm until 6 pm. And did we mention the Maze of Terror? Check it out.

This Saturday evening Little Creek Music Park features the Destination Bluegrass Band and Betty Griffin in concert. The music begins at 6 pm. The Park is on the Old Concord Road off Highway 73 in Millingport. There’s a dance floor where you can kick up your heels to the music and there’ll be food and door prizes. Bring your own lawn chair and enjoy the evening.

Also on this Saturday evening from 6 pm to 9 pm, the Agri-Civic Center hosts the Miss Stanly County Scholarship Pageant. This event is an opportunity for girls ages 13-24 to gain scholarship money. The winner of the Miss Stanly County and Miss Stanly County Outstanding Teen pageant will represent the county. The Miss Stanly County Scholarship Pageant is an official preliminary to the Miss North Carolina Scholarship Pageant through the Miss America system.

Stretch your weekend a little and on Monday enjoy Richfield’s Party in the Park from 9 am until 4 pm. There’ll be fun for all ages that includes food, arts and crafts, classic cars, an auction, a dog show and more.

Stanly County has a lot of events coming up this fall. “Tales from the Haunted Uwharries” is something you don’t want to miss this Halloween season. And there’s a Maze of Terror waiting for you. There are fall festivals, outdoor concerts and cruise-ins to enjoy and a grape stomp to test your wine-making skills. Read all about these events in the coming editions of This Weekend in Stanly County.
