This Weekend in Stanly County December 14

Tuesday, December 11, 2012 — Santa has certainly been busy around Stanly County for the last few weeks, riding in parades, tossing candy, laughing Ho, Ho, Ho, and making promises of gifts to come. In all our small communities, trees and houses and fences are festooned with lights, shops are filled with tempting gift items and children are remarkably well-behaved. Everywhere we look we are reminded that the countdown to Christmas has begun.

Sometime during the Christmas rush take time out and make a slow tour of the Hospice of Stanly County Festival of Trees at Stanly Commons in Albemarle. We all have someone to remember. Each year the Festival of Trees honors the memory of friends and loved ones no longer with us as dedicated volunteers hand-craft uniquely designed angels to adorn the trees. Hospice invites you to join them as they continue their cherished Angel Tree Lighting ceremony and Festival of Trees event each December. This year’s Angel's can be purchased to help provide funds needed to support Hospice programs and services. The trees will stay up until December the 28th.

From Tuesday December 11th through Friday December 14th, Liberty Gardens and Memorial Park in downtown Albemarle will be Lighting up the Greenway. Albemarle Parks and Recreation is celebrating 50 years of recreation and this year they invite you to join them for a special Christmas celebration as they illuminate the Greenway at Liberty Gardens and Memorial Park. Each evening from 5:50 pm to 7:30 pm there will be luminaries on the adjacent section of Greenway, decorated trees and refreshments at the park which will include hot cider, hot chocolate, coffee and cookies. There will also be local choral groups from 6 pm to 7 pm each evening and Santa Claus is rumored to be paying a visit at 6 pm on Friday December 14th. This is a warm and wonderful way to celebrate the season in our county seat and to celebrate the wonderful job the Albemarle Parks and Recreation Department has done in providing recreation for the community over the last 50 years.

Are you still looking for that special one-of-a-kind gift? The Holiday Craft Show, From our Hands to Your House, at Falling Rivers Gallery is the place to go. Local artists and crafters have unique gift items that include stained glass, jewelry, wood items, pottery, Christmas decorations, scented soaps, Christmas cards and much more. When you’re through checking out the craft show have a look around the permanent display in the Gallery itself. Here, the talent of our local artists really shines through. All items are for sale and all are one-of-a-kind.

Before the season is over, take time to ride around the county and admire the individual Christmas decorations created by home owners themselves. Reindeer pull sleds across rooftops, lights flash and twinkle, ponds glow with reflected light, and you may even spot Santa himself. We may not be a McAdenville, but we have plenty of beautiful and imaginative displays set up by our own Stanly Countians.
