Saturday, May 4, 2013 — The following is activity information from the Stanly County Senior Center 283 N. Third St., Albemarle.

Senior Center trips are open to the public; there are no age requirements. If you have never traveled with us, we invite you to join us. All trips are taken on a deluxe motorcoach. For individuals who have never been on this type bus, you have a captain’s chair, often times a footrest, reclining seat, TVs to play movies and the bus does have a restroom.Visa, Mastercard and Discover are accepted.

New Trip!

Dolly Parton’s musical “9 to 5,” June 11, at the beautiful Halton Theatre at Central Piedmont Community College.

The cost for this spectacular trip is $54 per person. We will travel over to Charlotte to enjoy the popular musical “9 to 5.”

We will make an afternoon dinner stop on the way before our 7 p.m. show at Central Piedmont Community College Theater.

Mackinac Island Trip, Sept. 8-14, $829 per person based on double occupancy. This trip includes: six nights hotel accommodations, six breakfasts, four wonderful dinners, and two lunches (one buffet lunch at the Grand Hotel and the other at Tahquamenon Falls Pub.)

Also included are, Hydro Jet Ferry Ride to Mackinac Island, Carriage Tour of the Island, a visit to the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum, Soo Locks Boat Tour, tour of Frankenmuth, Mich. and a visit to Bronner’s Christmas Wonderland.

10th annual Uwharrie Lakes Golf Championship – Support the Friends of the Senior Center on May 8 at Tillery Tradition Country Club. Format is 4-Man Captain’s Choice. Registration is from 11 a.m.-12:15 p.m., lunch is from 12:15-1 p.m. with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Entry fee is $55 per player or $220 per team and includes all green fees, carts, practice balls and lunch.

Entry forms are available at the Senior Center and must be received by May 6. Entry forms will be accepted on a first come first served basis.

Awards will be given for four closest to pin award, longest drive, $10,000 prize for a hole in one on designated hole and certificate for free lob wedge or hybrid club.

Second Annual Grandcare Recognition Luncheon – May 14 from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. A free lunchtime “get away” for any grandparent or other relative who is raising children because the parents are unable or unwilling to provide care.

This event will include a hot catered lunch, a chance to talk with representative of various agencies in the county to find out what help may be available to make your job easier and a fun keynote speaker. All this plus goody bags and door prizes. There is no charge to attend but pre-registration is required by May 9. To reserve your spot call the Senior Center at (704) 986-3769.

If childcare is needed for preschoolers in order for the grandparent to attend, contact Kathy Yow at the YMCA at (704) 982-1916.

Senior Spirit Day – Our annual Senior Spirit Day will be May 23 at the E.E. Waddell Center beginning at 10 a.m. The Legacy Tribute Band will be our special entertainment for the day.

A free hotdog lunch will be provided but you must register for the event by calling (704) 986-3769 no later than May 17.

Local agencies will provide information on resources around Stanly County. The event is being sponsored by Stanly County Senior Services in partnership with Albemarle Parks & Recreation. (This project is supported in part by a grant from the Grassroots Arts Program of the North Carolina Arts Council, a state agency, The National Endowment for the Arts and The Stanly County Arts Council.)

May Monthly Dance –  The May Monthly Dance will be  at 7:30 p.m. May 17. Admission is $1 with a finger food.

Singles Supper Club –  The Club will meet at 6:30 p.m. May 10 at Little Tokyo by Walmart, 730 Leonard Ave., Albemarle. RSVP to (704) 986-3769 by Friday before. All singles welcome.

Faith Club – The Faith Club meets the second Tuesday of each month. The next meeting will be May 14 at 2 p.m. All are welcome to come and discuss all religions.

May Monthly Luncheon & Program – This month’s luncheon will be at 11:30 a.m. May 16. Please RSVP by May 10.

Lunch will be spaghetti, tossed salad, garlic bread and dessert. The cost is $4 per person.

Diabetes educator, Terri with Novo Nordisk, and Registered Dietician, Vicki Moore with Stanly Regional Medical Center, will be here to discuss diabetes education and the importance of managing and controlling blood sugar levels.

Along with our diabetes program, we will have representatives from the YMCA, Gold’s Gym and Family Fitness to discuss their Silver Sneakers Program.

Legal Aid of N.C. – Legal Aid of N.C. provides free legal advice and assistance to eligible senior adults in Stanly County.

Seniors can call this toll free number (1-877-579-7562 ) for help. Seniors must be 60 years old and older and be a U.S. legal resident to be eligible for this free service.

Legal Aid will be here at the Senior Center on May 29 and June 13. Please call the toll free number to set up an appointment to meet with them.

Zumba Gold – The Zumba Gold fitness program is a specialty class designed to meet the anatomical, physiological, and psychological needs of the aging population. It was designed especially by Baby Boomers for Baby Boomers.

Like the traditional Latin-inspired Zumba workout, the Zumba Gold workout incorporates many of the dance/fitness routines set to Latin and international rhythms but is performed at a lower intensity.

Join us here at the Senior Center as we shake it up with exciting new dance-fitness workouts featuring upbeat music. Certified Instructor, Troy Connell, will be here to do an eight week summer session that will begin May 28.

The class will meet twice a week on Tuesday and Thursdays from 5:30-6:15 p.m. The cost is $35 per person.

During those eight weeks you will receive free access to all classes at Troy’s studio, Just Dance Fitness. Check out www.justdancefit.com for more information and a list of classes.

Registration is required. Deadline to register is May 24. Must have a minimum of 15 participants. Hurry and sign up!

Bingo – Bingo will be sponsored by Bayada and will be played May 20 at 3 p.m.

Stammtisch – The German Speakers group will meet May 22 at 3 p.m. All individuals who speak German are welcome to attend.

Veterans Club –  The club will meet at 9 a.m. May 28 at the Senior Center. Bethany Woods will provide the breakfast. Please RSVP by Friday before. Any veteran is welcome to join.

Readers & Eaters Book Club –  We will read “Thirteen Moons” by Charles Frazier during the month of May and will discuss that at the June 5 meeting at 10:30 a.m..

This book is a fictionalized rendition of the life and times of Will Thomas and his life with the Cherokee.

As a small child he is orphaned and eventually “bound” to the owner of a small trading post near the Cherokee reservation. Through hard work and diligence he ends up running the store and eventually buys the operation upon the owners death.

At the age of 12 he wins the love of his life in a card game. He fights in the Civil War on the side of the confederacy while leading a regiment of natives Americans.

Tai Chi – During the month of May, which is National Arthritis Month, we will play Dr. Lam’s instructional Tai Chi for Arthritis DVD. We will play the DVD out in the Big Room every Friday at 3 p.m. except for May 10.

Come enjoy a safe and easy-to-learn program proven to relieve pain and improve health and balance. Don’t forget to sign in as a drop-in.

Pinochle – A new group is getting together to play pinochle on Friday afternoons. They meet every Friday at 12 p.m. If you’re interested in being a part of the group, drop by and play one Friday afternoon.

Weekly Table Tennis – The ping pong tables will be set up every Wednesday afternoon, for those interested in dropping in and playing a game of table tennis. Stop by anytime after 2 p.m. to play.

Ladies Lunch Bunch – We will meet at 11:30 a.m. June 13 at Hwy. 55 Burgers, Fries and Shakes (also known as Andy’s), near Walmart at 1868 W. Main St. B-1, Suite 11660, Locust. Please RSVP the Friday before. All ladies welcome.
