Oakboro Police toy drive is success

Monday, December 31, 2012 — In November the Oakboro Police Department began collecting toys and new clothes for the holidays in their annual Toy Drive.

This is the eighth year they’ve had the drive and it keeps growing larger with each year.

“We have a lot more toys and items this year, than last,” said Oakboro Deputy Chief of Police Chad Green.

They have collected near ly 11 boxes worth of toys, clothes and gift cards for grocery stores.

“A lot of the items came from Dollar General and Family Dollar, and after that we have just a lot of individual donations,” said Green.

“The families will call in and set up an appointment, then come by and collect the items.

“Anything we have left over we will donate to Christian Ministries,” said Green.

Green said that he thought it was good thing to have the toy drive.

“There are lots of families this time of year that need help, who are suffering in this economy. I wish we could help out all year long, but this is a good time to help.”

Green relayed that during the middle of the year Oakboro PD collected food and canned goods to donate to Stanly County Christian Ministries.

“Christmas is a special time of year. You don’t want kids waking up on Christmas morning without anything. I think we should come together to help with that.

“I think of my own children. Then to see the eyes of the parents light up as they see what they’re going to give their kids and the kids’ excitement will be ten-fold seeing this stuff. It’s a good feeling to know you can help somebody,” said Green.

“I think it’s an awesome thing, what the police department is doing,” said Oakboro Mayor Danny Long.

“They’re reaching out to the community. The police protect and serve the community, and I think we often forget about the serving part.

“Service is about doing what people need. They have gone above and beyond the call to duty. What they’re doing represents the true meaning of Christmas,” said Long.

Mayor Long expressed how proud he was of the police department, Chief Lowder, Deputy Chief Green and the officers for going above and beyond their call to service.
