This Weekend in Stanly County March 1

By Bridget Huckabee for the SNAP

Tuesday, February 26, 2013 — This is a quiet time, a winter’s lull in the round of events that make up a Stanly County weekend. It’s a good time to explore the small friendly communities that are scattered among the farms and forests of the county. Here, there’s always something to see and do and this includes antique shops, art galleries, museums, golf courses, gold mines, wineries, and a variety of dining experiences.

Ready for a little culture? Stop in at the Roger Martin Gallery and Studio on East Main Street in downtown Albemarle. Then head up the street to the Falling Rivers Gallery on West Main Street. Then it’s off to Oakboro to visit the Ron Taylor Art Gallery on North Main Street.

Feeling lucky? Try your hand at gold panning at one of our three gold mines. Start at the Gold Patch Gold Mine in New London. Then try your hand, or your pan, at Mountain Creek Gold Mine also in New London. Of course you must be sure to visit the Reed Gold Mine State Historic Site on Reed Mine Road in Midland.

With your pockets full of gold, it’s time to eat and drink. First, choose a nice bottle of wine to go with that special meal. Take a trip along the county’s wine trail. Dennis Vineyards Winery on Endy Road is a good place to start. Uwharrie Vineyards and Winery on Austin Road is close by and down the road near the Reed Gold Mine is the Rocky River Vineyards. Up on a high hill overlooking the Yadkin Valley is Stony Mountain Vineyards and Winery. All have wine tastings on a regular basis and include party facilities and gift shops.

Restaurants are too numerous to list here, but for a gourmet treat at a reasonable price try Off the Square in downtown Albemarle. For a peaceful terrace overlooking the rolling greens of a golf course, try the Badin Inn and an evening of Pickin’ on the Porch. The Fresh House in Locust is another unique spot to try for lunch or dinner. Harmancos, the Rosebriar and Yadkin Valley Steakhouse are three more not to be missed as you sample the variety of great dining in our small county.

For a faster pace and to work off some of that high living, try a round of golf. You’ll find a lot of choices in and around the county. Courses include Badin Inn Golf Resort and Club in Badin, Mountain Brook Golf Course on Nelson Mountain Road in Albemarle, Piney Point Golf Club in Norwood, Red Bridge Golf Club in Locust, The Tillery Tradition Country Club in Mount Gilead and Uwharrie Point, Home of the Old North State Club on Badin Lake.

Take advantage of this quiet time of the year to create your own events this weekend in Stanly County.
