South Stanly competes at Skills USA contest

Monday, February 27, 2012 — A contingent of 20 South Stanly High School (SSHS) Career and Technology Education students competed at the Southwest Regional Skills USA contest in Salisbury recently in various technology related and leadership skill events. The group from SSHS virtually owned two technology events, earning all but one medal in each and brought home a total of 16 medals.

The following students captured awards in their respective competitions allowing them to advance to the State Competition in April:

Drayton Diggs – First place Electronics Technology; Tyler Blalock – Second place Electronics Technology; Jonathan Beachum – Third place Electronics Technology; Dalton Culler – Fourth place Electronics Technology; Laura McCammon – First place Prepared Speech; Cheyenne Johnston – First place Poster; Tera Mabry – Second place Poster; Janna Murr – Third place Poster; Hunter Gray and Heather Hudson – First place Debate (team event); Jesse Barrett – First place Drafting 1; Adam Faulkner – Second place Drafting 1; Taylor Hartis – Third place Drafting 1; Hunter Coley – Fourth place Drafting 1; Tanner Gresham – Second place Technical Drafting; Anslee Smith – Fifth place Architectural Drafting.

The club is now preparing for the State Competition in April and hopes to continue a tradition of showcasing the talents and abilities of SSHS students at the event.

The Skills USA organization is the nation’s largest Career Technology Student Organization and holds its national competition in Kansas City, Mo. in late June. SSHS has produced more than 20 State Champions that have represented North Carolina at the event.
