The Charles A. Cannon Charitable Trusts, Concord, have awarded a $200,000 grant to Pfeiffer University, primarily for renovations to the lecture hall on the main floor of the Harris Science Building on its Misenheimer campus.
Support for updating what is currently the campus’s largest learning space includes integrating state-of-the-art technology into its infrastructure to enhance the teaching and learning experience for faculty and students.
Maximizing Harris’s central and accessible campus location, renovations will allow the lecture hall to function as a centralized meeting space and classroom. New furnishings and adjustments to seating will enable users to effectively utilize presentation technology designed to promote exceptional student-faculty interaction and engagement.
“Pfeiffer University’s emerging role as a statewide and regional leader for health-related programs requires facilities with advanced technological resources that help students acquire the skills that today’s employers demand,” said Michael C. Miller, president.
“Generous support from the Charles A. Cannon Charitable Trusts certainly makes it possible for Pfeiffer not only to compete with similar programs in the region but also offer what others might not.”
The renovations to Harris Science Building will complement recently completed upgrades to Harris’s second floor, a space designed specifically for the department of Nursing, which opened in the fall 2012. Its features, which include several automated clinical care stations that are programmable from an adjacent observation room, accommodate innovative nursing education for Pfeiffer’s rapidly growing bachelor of science in nursing program. Support for these enhancements came from earlier foundation support and individual donor gifts.
“Leading-edge facilities are essential for attracting the best and brightest students as well as highly qualified faculty members,” said Dr. Mark McCallum, interim dean, division of arts and science.
“The Harris Science Building is set to become a model on campus for fostering the critical thinking and engaged learning that are fundamental to an excellent educational experience.”
A small portion of the grant will be used to support Pfeiffer’s strategic efforts to strengthen the university’s overall competitive position in the higher education sphere through branding and integrated marketing and communication.
These activities will be designed to maximize enrollment for undergraduate and graduate programs in Pfeiffer’s divisions of health-related programs, arts and sciences, business and education.
