Alpha Delta Kappa meets, elects officers

Friday, September 21, 2012 — The XI chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa met recently at Judy’s Restaurant in Albemarle.

Alpha Delta Kappa is dedicated to improving and promoting education and the teaching profession, taking personal action to making a difference in the community and increasing world understanding.

The organization gave $2.5 million in scholarships and volunteered more than 2 million hours to educational and charitable causes.

Joyce Whitley, chaplain, gave each member a “love kit” of items with inspirational verses and opened the meeting with encouraging words and a prayer.

Reports were given from members who participated in a District Workshop in Rockwell on Aug. 25.

Alpha Delta Kappa members have many altruistic projects planned for the year, participating on the national, as well as local levels. On the national level, members have donated more than $2.3 million to St. Jude Children’s Research Hos-pital, more than $480,000 to Susan G. Komen for the Cure and $250,000 to the Pediatric AIDS Foundation.

Locally, members are sponsoring a book program for Stanly Regional Medical Center. Members are also adopting a teacher in Stanly County, providing supplies for the classroom. A $500 scholarship will be awarded to a student in Stanly County who is planning to major in education.

Doris Eudy, president-elect, led the members in several activities involving world education. Members include: Vivian Barnette, Jane Barnhardt, Jane Borders, Candace Brady, Mae Brooks, Peggy Burris, Barbara Carpenter, Dee Dee Crump, Ann Dawson, Doris Eudy, Jean Honeycutt, Kathy Hunt, Barbara Klein, Colleen Lambert, Sue Lisk, Pam Medlin, Priscilla Perry,  Audrey Rigsbee, Wanda Smith, Hilda Snuggs, Katherine Talbert, Brenda Teeter, Teresa Underwood, Joyce Whitley, Tricia Whitley, and Lori Williams.

The next meeting will be Oct. 11.
