The Stanly Community College (SCC) Chorus will present a Christmas concert on Dec. 8 at 7 p.m. in the Kelley Building auditorium on the Albemarle campus. This group is made up of SCC faculty and staff, as well as community citizens. There will be a variety of traditional and unusual renditions of favorite Christmas songs. This is a free concert and is open to the public.
Among the choral selections include “It’s the Holiday Season” by Kay Thompson and “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” written by Frank Loesser from the movie, Neptune’s Daughter. The perennial favorite “Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!” with words by Sammy Cahn and music by Jule Styne is also included on the program with Salina Osborne singing a solo with the chorus.
For those who are familiar with “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” they may love this different version of “Linus and Lucy.”
“Christmas Is” is a new Christmas song by Jay Rouse that urges the listener to think of Christmas as more than just singing carols and making a list for Santa. The ensemble is also singing a rendition of “The Little Drummer Boy/Peace on Earth” that was made famous by David Bowie and Bing Crosby. Also included in the program is the spiritual “What a Wonderful Child.” Two of the group’s favorite pieces are “Somewhere in My Memory,” written by Leslie Bricusse/John Williams and “White Christmas,” a doo-wop version of the Irving Berlin hit. Both of these songs were featured in the movie Home Alone.
Marcie Laton and Ken Ringer are the featured soloists in “White Christmas.” “A Swingin’ Christmas” is a medley of “Winter Wonderland,” “I’ll be Home for Christmas” (featuring Becky Wall as soloist), and “Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town.” The program will end with a partner song which includes “Jingle-Bell Rock” and “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree.”
Members of the group are: soprano – Cynthia Callahan, Marcie Laton and Minnie McPherson; alto – Michelle Osborne, Salina Osborne, Becky Wall and Alicia Xiong; tenor – Tim Hedrick; and bass – Tom Horner and Ken Ringler. Charlotte Maness is the accompanist for the group which is directed by Carmella Hedrick.
The choral group hopes that others will enjoy their presentation and come join them in January. Rehearsals are Mondays at 4 p.m.
