Stanly County resident will perform on "Late Show with David Letterman"

Tuesday, November 8, 2011 — When Lonesome River Band performs on “Late Show With David Letterman” Friday night, a Stanly County resident will be there.

Mike Hartgrove, of Albemarle, is the fiddle player for Lonesome River Band. The band will perform on Letterman with actor, comedian and banjo player Steve Martin.

The “Late Show” performance came about after September, when Martin awarded the second Steve Martin Prize for Excellence in Banjo and Bluegrass to Sammy Shelor, banjo picker for Lonesome River. The prize comes with a bronze sculpture and $50,000.

“There is no one who is more deserving of this honor than Sammy,” said bluegrass promoter Jeff Branch of Oakboro.

The group will headline the Saturday portion of Branch’s Big Lick Bluegrass Festival April 12-14, 2012.

As for the Friday night show, Hartgrove said he has met Steve Martin before at the International Bluegrass Music Awards.

“He asked me what band I was with and I told him and he said, ‘I have all your albums.’ He’s a really nice guy,” Hartgrove said.
