As students prepare for a relaxing summer around town with a vacation or two planned throughout the season, South Stanly High School Junior Candace Biles will be heading overseas.
Biles was selected from Stanly County to attend the People to People Ambassador Program with 31 students who will share the experience together.
As part of President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s plan to bring peace between citizens of different cultures and places, People to People gives young people the opportunity to communicate with natives from other countries in order to create a step toward peaceful living and civil communication.
Biles will visit England, Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Germany and Switzerland from July 6 to July 26. In preparation, Biles is required to attend classes to prepare her for the culture she will observe, including religion, arts, geography and politics in the areas she will visit.
“I want to learn how others live and see what they deal with every day,” Biles said as she explained what she was hoping to get out of the trip.
“If I experience things with them, I’ll know what they go through every day.”
In addition to the classroom preparation, the group is required to perform community service beforehand.
Due to the cost of the trip, Biles and her family said they would appreciate any financial assistance for this educational opportunity the community can give them. The cost is approximately $6,000.
Checks can be made payable to Sylvia and Bernard Biles, 242 S. Kendall St., Norwood, NC 28128. In the memo line, please include People to People Student Ambassador Program.
For further information, contact Biles at (704) 474-5705 or (704) 985-6045.
