Dozens of area youths participated in Stanly Community College’s (SCC) summer camp programs last week.
“Leaders in Training Summer Camp 2008” was designed to introduce rising seventh and eighth graders to the areas of health services, business, criminal justice and technology.
The camps filled up quickly, limited to 20 participates per area of study. Students attend camps for a variety of reasons, and research suggests that camp involvement impacts youth in different ways — enhancing self-es-teem, self-concept, knowledge skills, and behaviors, just to name a few.
“We’re pleased to be able to offer summer camps to our community youth, and we anticipate an even bigger program for next summer,” said SCC President Dr. Michael Taylor.
“As educators, we are always looking for ways to enhance the academic growth and discovery process in our youth.”
The students were able to choose from four camps:
• The Animators — Simulation, Gaming and Graphics; participants were able to make their own video games, create digital art, and develop a website.
• Wellness Wizards — Health Services; camp included emergency room simulations, lab experiments, paramedic/emergency services, intensive care nursing/preemie babies, build a brain workshop and aerobic/fitness demonstrations.
• Taking Care of Business — Entrepreneurship; this camp focused on small businesses, online business role playing; how to make your own commercial, and touring the Stanly News & Press and several small businesses.
• Protection Squad — Criminal Justice/Protective Services; camp participants were introduced to: crime scene investigation techniques, fingerprinting and impressions, investigation of a mock crime scene and a radar demonstration.
SCC would like to extend a special thank you to John Amirtharaj and Universal Fiber Systems LLC/Premiere Fibers, who helped make the camps a success.
