Children learn yoga

Thursday, July 10, 2008 — A yoga camp for children was conducted at Albemarle Pilates and Yoga on North First Street this week. The classes were geared towards children ages 3-11.

The first class, which consisted of four 3-year-olds and 4-year-olds, was from 9 a.m.-10 p.m. The 7-year-olds to 11-year-olds class, which consisted of 10 children, followed from 10:15-11:15 a.m.

“I’ve always taught kids. I taught dance and school and I thought I could incorporate a class of yoga and pilates that could benefit children,” said Cindy Megson, instructor for the camp.

Megson said the benefit for children is enormous because they are able to learn about flexibility and relaxation while being aware of their bodies.

The cost per student for the camp was $30, and the children were asked to bring mats.

Megson said she would like to add a weekly class to her schedule but it would depend on participation.

Albemarle Pilates and Yoga is at 239 N. First St. in Albemarle. It opened in March and offers classes in mixed yoga, mixed pilates, gentle pilates, slow flow yoga, yoga/pilates fusion and a brand new class hot yoga.
