Girls on the Run meets Gray Stone Day School

By Marilyn Kinsey

Thursday, August 21, 2008 Molly Barker, founder of Girls on the Run, spent the afternoon with the freshman class at Gray Stone Day School. After a picnic lunch at the lake on Pfeiffer University’s campus, she led the students in team building activities, helping them understand the importance of supporting each other and their school.

This past week, about 80 incoming freshmen spent three days becoming acclimated to the facility and the curriculum at Gray Stone Day School.

Students were given seminars on study skills, note and test taking, plagiarism, and how to write a paper to help them prepare for the upcoming school year.

They were also given the opportunity to follow their class schedules, meet their teachers, and receive their books.

“Many freshmen are anxious about going to high school,” said Helen Nance, chief administrator at the school.

“They don’t know what to expect and they are afraid of getting lost as they hunt for classrooms. This orientation provides them the opportunity to become familiar with their surroundings before everyone comes to school the first day.”

As part of this experience, Barker provided the training needed to help students succeed in high school as well as making it comfortable for students to meet each other.

“Students at Gray Stone come from so many different areas, very few of them know more than one or two other students,” said Barker.

“I was thrilled to be able to help them learn about each other and how to work together in a non-threatening atmosphere.

Girls on the Run is a non-profit prevention program that encourages preteen girls to develop self-respect and healthy lifestyles through running. The curricula address all aspects of girls' development - their physical, emotional, mental, social and spiritual well-being.

Gray Stone students from the junior and senior classes also helped with the activities.

For her senior project, Elizabeth Streble is leading a group of upperclassman as they mentor to incoming freshmen.

Freshmen may volunteer to be partnered with a junior or senior who will help them through their first year of high school. This program was begun last year as a pilot program by, then senior, Sara Brown. The mentors are available to the new students to help them with classes, tutoring, and answering all their questions as well as providing emotional support.

Barker trained the mentors to be facilitators of the activities prior to the event.

“It was very enlightening to work with Molly and see how to help someone become aware of how they feel about themselves and others,” said Streble.

“It was a growing experience for the mentors as well.”

It just so happens, that Barker, founder of Girls on the Run and Nance, founder of Gray Stone Day School are sisters. Having grown up in Charlotte, to parents who were very active in the community, both women have chosen to help young people become successful and productive adults.

“It was such fun to get to do a project with Molly. It is seldom that we get to work together and I know we had as much fun as the students,” said Nance.
