Kellie Pickler and Derek Hough jazzed it up Monday night, performing a contemporary jazz routine to end the second episode of “Dancing With The Stars.”
The duo received a 26 out of 30 from the judges, lifting them to a sole second place position with a total of 47 of 60 for the two weeks.
Leigh Roush teaches classical and contemporary jazz as well as ballet at her Albemarle Academy of Dance studio.
She commented on Pickler’s performance.
“I think Kellie has danced extremely well in both episodes. She obviously has a lot of natural talent, including strength, extension and musicality but it is clear that she is working very hard,” she said.
“Even with natural ability, it is extremely difficult to maintain good technique and perform as well as she has. Her job as a dancer will be to take and apply every correction she is given both quickly and effectively both quickly and effectively and she will continue to improve just as quickly.
“As a teacher, I really appreciate the fact that she listened to the corrections the judges gave her last week and obviously applied them to her work this week. Last week she had issues with stiff legs but by tonight she had improved her hip placement which relaxed her legs. Tonight, I felt her shoulders were a bit tense which caused her upper body to be stiff. Hopefully, someone will point this out to her so she can improve that by next week.
“Personally, I would love to see her find a great ballet teacher to really refine her technique and help her to understand how to use her alignment. With her potential, I think she could go far.”
