Clinton takes Stanly, loses North Carolina
By B.J. Drye, Managing Editor
Thursday, May 8, 2008 —
In the first primary election in 20 years where North Carolina could play a substantial role in picking a presidential nominee, Democratic ballot voters in the state picked Sen. Barack Obama over Sen. Hillary Clinton on Tuesday. Obama won with 56 percent of the vote, compared to Clinton’s 41 percent.
Within seconds of the polls closing Tuesday night, several news sources projected Obama as the winner.
“You know, there are those who were saying that North Carolina would be a game-changer in this election. But today what North Carolina decided is that the only game that needs changing is the one in Washington, D.C.,” said Obama, addressing supporters at an election night party at North Carolina State University in Raleigh.
Obama went on to congratulate Clinton on her presumed win in Indiana. (She won 51 percent to 49 percent.) He thanked his volunteers in Indiana and then turned to thank his supporters in North Carolina.
“I want to thank them for giving us a win in a big state, in a swing state, in a state where we will compete to win if I am the Democratic nominee for president of the United States.”
In Stanly County, the race was opposite of the statewide race. Clinton won with 60.9 percent of the vote, compared to Obama’s 35.3 percent.
During a speech in Indiana Tuesday night, Clinton made it clear that she was staying in the race.
“Not too long ago, my opponent made a prediction. He said I would probably win Pennsylvania, he would win North Carolina, and Indiana would be the tiebreaker,” she said.
“Well, tonight we’ve come from behind, we’ve broken the tie, and, thanks to you, it’s full speed onto the White House.”
On the Republican side, Sen. John McCain, already having secured enough delegates to win the party’s nomination, dominated the balloting in North Carolina,
McCain secured 76.1 percent of the Republican ballot vote, with Mike Huckabee garnering 12.9 percent in Stanly County. Statewide, McCain won with close to 74 percent.
