Sunday, July 13, 2008 — In his first six books, Fred T. Morgan sent shivers up our collective spine as he recounted ghost stories told by early Uwharrians.

In his seventh book, he introduced us to the Uwharrians themselves.

Now, in his eighth book he delves deeply into his career as a newspaperman -- bringing back 50 of his most memorable stories.

The book, “Come To The Lobby...”, is being published by The Stanly News & Press where Morgan worked as Feature Editor. Publisher Sandy Selvy calls him “a rare (journalistic) jewel.” Publication is scheduled for October of this year.

The newspaper is offering a subscription discount to readers who buy the book before Sept. 1. The offer is described in detail in an advertisement elsewhere in this issue.

“Come To The Lobby...” is a salute to the dozens of tipsters who regularly walked into The Stanly News & Press lobby with invaluable pieces of information, which often led to important news or feature stories.

Not only does Morgan revisit some of his best and most popular stories, he also treats the reader to several extra bits of “inside information” -- little entertaining never-before-told snippets about fellow Stanly News & Press staffers.

“Come To The Lobby...” also contains some interesting photographs of him as a younger journalist as well as contemporary photos.

The biggest story in the book, and probably the biggest of his newspaper career, tells of a West Virginian named Leroy Shadrick. In 1957 Shadrick robbed the Home Savings and Loan office in Albemarle. He was captured almost immediately. That was just the beginning of the story.

In an exclusive interview with the prisoner, Morgan found the rest of the story -- a story so bizarre and so important it quickly became an international headline and television lead.

Shadrick’s plan was to steal enough money to finance his scheme to kill then-President Harry Truman. And Morgan had the exclusive interview!

The book re-tells the story in its entirety.

Most of the book, however, is lighter fare -- ordinary Stanly County people and events right here at home. The artist he refers to as a local “Grandma Moses.” His misadventures on an all-night coon hunt. A whimsical children’s story about the apple that “fell up.”

As Ms. Selvy recounts in her preface in the book, Morgan was a prize winning writer/editor at the newspaper for more than three decades. His first big award came just months after being hired by John B. Harris. For 34 years he collected additional awards on a regular basis.

Three of his previous books are still in print and a fourth is being considered for its third printing.
