Bond reduction for Neumar denied

By Jay Almond, News Editor

Tuesday, July 15, 2008 Betty Neumar’s bond remains at $500,000 despite a bond reduction request made Monday afternoon by her attorney, Charles Parnell.

Parnell presented the request in a Stanly County courtroom to presiding District Court Judge Lisa Thacker, focusing on the fact that his client is charged with a Class H felony, a criminal classification he said would typically carry a roughly $5,000 bond.

“This is a $500,000 bond on a 22-year-old case and a 76-year-old lady with no prior record ... she is not a flight risk,” Parnell said.

“This case has taken on a life of its own ... we’ve heard all this speculation about other districts but there has not been one charge.

“The presumptive range in 1986 was three years and that’s what we’re dealing with ... $500,000 is unheard of for a Class H felony.”

Neumar faces felony solicitation to commit murder in connection with the July 14, 1986 shooting death of her then-husband, Harold Gentry, in the couple’s Norwood home.

A conviction for that charge under the 22-year-old statutes Neumar faces ranges from probation to 10 years.

Assistant District Attorney for Stanly County Tim Rodgers responded with concerns for Neumar’s likelihood of becoming a fugitive from justice.

“We can verify 16 different aliases she has used,” Rodgers said.

“We have multiple passports, we have multiple licenses and multiple credit cards with different names.

“As recently as last Friday another jurisdiction discovered evidence that has raised suspicion in the death of one of Mrs. Neumar’s husbands ... I think the information they’ve uncovered increases her risk of flight.”

Although the court ruled against a bond reduction, Parnell reserved the right to revisit the request at a later date.

Neumar was one of several Stanly County Jail inmates brought into the courtroom for hearings Monday, but as the group lined the wall in a row of seats to the judge’s far right, she was easily recognizable.

Just as calmly as she had approached the defendant’s table prior to the attorneys’ statements she returned to her seat along the wall following the judge’s bond ruling.

The initial reason for her courtroom appearance was actually for a probable cause hearing that was scheduled to be held in August.

That hearing, once held, may serve to bind Neumar over to Superior Court, but barring such a ruling, the day’s events were enough for Gentry’s surviving brothers, Al and Richard.

The brothers were in the courtroom, seated in the jury box with nearly every other seat filled, to witness the proceedings regarding the woman once married to their late brother.

When approached about their assessment of the day’s eventual course, they were direct about their feelings.

“She’s still in jail isn’t she,” Richard asked rhetorically as he moved toward the courtroom exit with his smiling wife.

Al shared his brother’s sentiment, suggesting the current state of Neumar’s affairs suited him just fine for the time being.

“They’ve got her still in jail,” he said.

“That’s the main thing.”

Leaving the courtroom behind, the Gentry brothers, as well as Parnell, were mobbed by media representatives as they exited the building, descending its stairs toward the sidewalk of Second Street.

The brothers stopped at the base of the stairs and faced the cameras, speaking into a cluster of waving microphones and anxious questions.

Parnell responded briefly to inquiries as he crossed the street toward his law office, pausing a moment before entering his building.

Neumar is next scheduled to appear in court Aug. 11.
