Albemarle Class of 1958 marks 50 years

Tuesday, July 22, 2008 The Albemarle Senior High School Class of 1958, the last class to graduate from the old Albemarle High School, had its 50th anniversary reunion the weekend of June 20.

It was a busy weekend, starting on Friday night with a barbecue at River Haven hosted by classmate Ken Helderman. On Saturday they met for lunch at Harmanco’s where the dining room was decorated with blue and white balloons, the school colors.

Many of those present had not seen the remodeled school, so that was the next stop. Classmate architect Bill Hartsell brought the original architectural drawing from 1924 and had them displayed for all to look at before a guided tour by former Albemarle Middle School teacher and local historian John Williams.

The class had taken donations and had presented the school with a bronze plaque in recognition of the classes from 1924 to 1958 who have passed through its halls. The plaque now hangs just inside the original entrance to the school.

After the group lined up on the front steps, not an easy accomplishment, a class photo was taken.

To top the day off, the group met at the Helderman cottage for more fellowship and a catered dinner. A memorial poster with pictures of those classmates who have died was displayed so all could see and remember. Their names were also read aloud prior to the meal.

Honored guests were former teachers, Mrs. Millie Carter and Mrs. Mim Deese and Coach Toby Webb and Mr. and Mrs. Bear Knotts.

Kitty Almond Robison had saved copies of the Full Moon school paper all these years, carrying them with her as she and her husband were stationed overseas several times. She invited classmates to take any they would like to have as she felt she had kept them long enough.

While many classmates still live in the Albemarle area, there were some who traveled from South Carolina, Georgia, Virginia, Florida, even as far away as Massachusetts, Rhode Island and California.

There was a unanimous vote to have another reunion in five years with hopes that those who were unable to attend this time will be able to come then.
