Burris finishes 2nd at ‘Gimme the Mike!’

By Dexter Hinson, Staff Writer

Thursday, August 7, 2008 With one of the world’s most energetic audiences, it was easy for each of the seven finalists to give their all during the finale of WSOC-TV’s “Gimme The Mike! Charlotte” singing competition Wednesday evening.

Amongst the continued singing, snacking and family-like camaraderie shared by contestants along the hallways of the backstage area, Shelly Burris of Richfield sat in a stylist’s chair, having the final touches done to her bright blonde hair nearly two hours before show time.

Making her way to the green room, she sat quitely in the comfortable setting, lined with some of the most comfortable leather sofas in America and other hospitable, five-star hotel-like amenities.

Nervousness is something Burris admits to having, though it did not show the least bit.

The contestants arrived on location at 1:30 p.m. for sound checks and rehearsal for the night’s big event, and after each contestant heard one another’s performance, a common factor was realized: they all were good.

“It could go anyway,” said Burris about an hour before showtime.

All contestants were very friendly and easy to talk to. Sure enough, a bond had been created among them, with talks of adding one another as friends on MySpace and Facebook, two of the cyber world’s most popular social networking Web sites.

The show began with host Craig Reynolds pumping up the audience to no end.

Burris was the first performer in the second group to take stage, singing rock band Journey’s 1982 hit “Open Arms.” After giving a stellar performance in her own unique manner, the panel of judges gave their opinions in a stunned fashion.

“I wanted to borrow somebody’s lighter,” said 96.9 FM Kat Country’s Ken Buckner.

“The thing I like most about you is your originality. You need to record that song tomorrow.”

Jacinda of 96.1 The Beat’s “AM Mayhem” morning show followed with similiar thoughts.

“You knocked it out of the park,” she said, followed by fellow “AM Mayhem” host and judge David L.

“You walked out here and let everybody else know you owned the stage.”

The most revered and respected of the judges was Fred Story, founder of Concentrix Music and Sound Design in Charlotte, who has served as judge for the show since the beginning.

“That song could be a country hit,” he said, hinting that several rock songs from the late 70s and 80s have done well for many mainstream artists in the genre.

Making it to the top two along with Charlotte’s Adrienne Valux, who very soulfully sang Barbra Streisand’s “The Way We Were” was a major feat, considering the amount of talent that each performer possessed.

The two-minute commercial break seemed like hours, knowing that the winner would be announced soon.

Valux took the gold, while she and Burris congratulated one another as if they were each other’s No. 1 fan.

“Overwhelmed in a good way,” was the phrase Burris used to describe her feelings of the energy-filled night.

The future for Burris, Valux and the other five contestants holds much promise. Stay tuned.
