Former North Stanly head football coach now boss of a different kind

By Charles Curcio, Sports Editor

Sunday, August 17, 2008 The office is a little cluttered with a mixture of inspirational quotes, sports memorabilia and folders for work strewn about the room.

Next to his desk is a dry erase board containing a collection of messages from students saying this like “Mr. Parker Rocks!”

The students may be different now, without shoulder pads and helmets, but former North Stanly head coach Curtis Little is a coach of a different kind now.

Working as the Dean of Student Services for Stanly Early College, Parker now works with students looking to earn their high school diploma and a two-year associate degree from Stanly Community College.

“I love my job here at Stanly Early College,” Parker said.

“I get the chance to deal with people from all walks of life like when I was coaching, which really enhances my life. I like the idea of building relationships with the students.”

As the Dean of Student Services, Parker deals with many of the student issues, such as counseling, driver’s education and student enrichment. He works closely with juniors who are taking continuing education classes as well.

The former Forest Hills and University of North Carolina player admits that he really misses football around this time of year.

“This is a tough time of the year for me. I can smell the grass when it’s cut and it makes me miss the game. I don’t even like cutting my own grass,” Parker said.

Dealing with that absence of football has been lightened some with Parker’s relationship with Stanly County Monday NIght Football, the television rebroadcasts of local area high school football games on Time-Warner Cable.

“Announcing has helped me to not miss football as much,” Parker said.

“Being able to sit up in the booth and analyzing games has been fun.”

If his work at Stanly Early College didn’t keep him busy enough, Parker is also head minister of New London Church of Christ.

Parker credits his faith for helping him to juggle all of his work with family commitments.

“I truly believe that becoming right with God is the way. I try to set an example here and at home. If God is first, all else will fall in line,” Parker said.

Beyond his faith, Parker said that he could not do any of what he does without the support of his family, especially his wife Regina, who teaches biotechnology at Kannapolis Middle School.

The skills he uses in the roles of father, school dean and minister are much like coaching.

“I’m a people person and I believe that each individual person matters and I really like working with young people,” Curtis said.

The former coach says that he believes that educators should be role models, saying that “we should display role model behavior, especially when things don’t go well. Fumbles happen in life, it’s how we deal with them that matters.”
