Greenway groundbreaking arrives

Tuesday, August 19, 2008 — The first phase of the Roger F. Snyder Greenway is now in the works after the official groundbreaking ceremony Monday evening.

Don Montgomery Park was filled with Albemarle and Stanly County officials, residents and friends and family of the late Roger F. Snyder, a former mayor and city council member. His goal was to start a greenway system in Albemarle to improve the health of the citizens, economic development and citizen satisfaction.

Mayor Elbert L. “Whit” Whitley welcomed guests and recognized special guests who attended the event. He then spoke fondly of Snyder.

“Roger Snyder was my friend. He was a great guy to be around and created excitement in his own way,” Whitley said.

“He played hard, worked hard and served his fellow man in the same way.”

City Manager Raymond Allen talked briefly on the history of the greenway and what it has become. Allen said he also had the privilege of working with Snyder and remembered him fondly for his love and commitment to the city.

Funding for the project was handled in 2000, however, roadblocks were evident. County Commissioner Lindsey Dunevant said he appreciated all the help that was involved in getting the greenway started.

“This is a great day for the city, what it says and what it means for our city,” Dunevant said.

“This is a great community and we are certainly proud of it.”

Albemarle Parks and Recreation Director Toby Thorpe recited an old Chinese proverb before speaking on phase one of the greenway.

“A journey of 1,000 miles begins with a single step,” he said.

“The city of Albemarle is going into an exciting time by going forward with this.”

Thorpe said that greenways make a healthy lifestyle more attractive and more attainable.

Phase one of the greenway will begin at the intersection of the existing bike path at Salisbury Avenue down to Don Montgomery Park.

The greenway will connect to the existing bike path beginning at the ball fields and will then head east to Little Long Creek and run parallel south to West Main Street. Phase one will be four-tenths of a mile.

Thorpe said if all goes well, phase one will be completed Nov. 11.

Members of the city council and the Snyder family surrounded the mound of dirt before breaking ground to begin the project. Light refreshments were provided by the Albemarle Parks and Recreation staff.
