Free Thanksgiving meal offered

Thursday, November 27, 2008 — A community Thanksgiving dinner will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Thanksgiving Day at Johnathan’s Restaurant on the N.C. 24-27 Bypass in Albemarle.

“It is for everybody who has nowhere to go,” said John Fragakis, owner of Johnathan’s.

“It will be on the honor system. If there are people who take advantage, that’s okay. If it happens, it happens.

“To be honest I came from a rather poor family in the old country (Greece). Sometimes we didn’t have the necessities. The opportunity came in 1963 for us to go to the United States. I was fortunate. The values my parents taught me, the work ethic, society back then, all helped me get where I am. I was fortunate to make what I have made and be successsful. By the same token I never forget what it is like to be on the other side.

“I know what it’s like for a kid at Christmastime to want a toy and the parents not be able to buy it. Also, I’m a firm believer that the purpose of our existence is not to just accumulate wealth and sit on it. The purpose of our existence is to help one another for a better society. Basically that is the main reason I’m doing this.”

For the past 21 years Fragakis has owned a restaurant in Concord, Mr. C’s. The tradition in that restaurant also is to do things that better society, be a good corporate citizen and help people.

“We will be prepared for 500 people,” he said of the Thanksgiving meal.

“But we don’t have seating for that many. I hope the weather will cooperate so I can have outside tables and chairs.”

It will be eat on site only. They will not make to go orders and will not deliver.

“We will serve chicken, wedge potatoes, mashed pottoes, cole slaw and our dinner rolls which are special made,” Fragakis said.

“This restaurant and Mr C.’s have the same owner. The concept and service are the same. We have been so successful in Concord and here.

“I want to take this opportunity to thank the people in Albemarle and Stanly County for their overwhelming support and acceptance. I feel like I have become a part of the community. That was another reason for doing this.

“To live by our integrity, honesty, the work ethic, professionalism, that’s what we display at Jonathan’s. We know we are a different restaurant with a different set up and system than the people here have been used to in Stanly County. However it is so simple is what is confusing.”

Thanksgiving hours are 11:30-130. Just show up. No appoinment is necessary.

“We want to take this opportunity to wish people in Stanly County a very Merry Christmas and a better New Year for ‘09, from all of us here at Jonathan’s,” Fragakis said.

Stanly Community Christian Ministry in Albemarle is partnering with Jonathan’s in this effort to spread the word.

“We think it’s the most wonderful thing we’ve ever heard of,” said Faye Hatley, assistant director of Stanly Communty Christian Ministry.

“We have secured plenty of volunteers, made arrangements with Santa Claus and have been passing out flyers at both soup kitchens and at SCCM Assistance Center. If only other businesses would take just a little bit of his passion. We’re pleased to do all we can to help him.”
