Second half rally stops Albemarle

By Charles Curcio, Sports Editor

Sunday, November 30, 2008 The start for the Albemarle football team Friday night was so strong that a stunned home crowd at Thomasville’s Cushwa Stadium sat in relative silence for the first half of Friday night’s third-round playoff game.

The blue-and-white Bulldogs led 13-3 at halftime and had limited Thomasville to two net yards rushing.

Thomasville’s fans awoke in the second half as the home-standing Red Dogs rallied with 21 unanswered points in the second half for a 24-13 win in the third round of the 1AA playoffs.

Of the Red Dogs 373 total net yards in the game, 297 came in the second half, including a 78-yard touchdown run by Jonathan Hinson.

Hinson would gain 182 yards on the night on 20 carries after having just 15 net yards in the first half.

Brad Wilkes added 63 yards and a touchdown as well for Thomasville.

“We told the defense that they would have to step up tonight. They were great in the first half but we gave up some big plays in the second,” Albemarle head coach Baxter Morris said.

Thomasville struggled on third-down conversions in the game, finishing 2-for-7 in that category and having no third-down conversions in the first half.

Penalties plagued both teams as Albemarle had seven penalties for 70 yards while Thomasville had nine penalties for 73 yards.

Both teams has two turnovers and Albemarle held the ball for 27:53, while Thomasville’s time of possession was 20:07.

Albemarle running back Jamar Corpening broke the 2,000 yard mark for the season with his 139 yards on 25 carries and a touchdown. A.J. Little reached the century mark with 108 yards.

Brian Polk finished that opening drive with a nine-yard scramble for a touchdown, capping an 8-play, 75-yard scoring drive.

Albemarle would go up 13-0 after r recovering a fumble at the Red Dogs’ 43. Six plays and 3:05 later, Corpening scored his 22nd touchdown of the season to give the Blue Dogs a 13-0 lead.

The big play that hurt Albemarle in the team’s first meeting came back as several big run led to Hinson’s first TD run.

Thomasville took the lead 17-13 on a four-play, 68 yards drive, highlighted by Brad Wilkes 23-yard run and a 38 yard pass from Chris Brooks to Brandon Lucas.

Brooks would finish 8-of-13 for 129 yards and was sacked twice, both times by Denico Autry.

On the ensuing drive, Albemarle would start on their own 26 and drive for almost five minute down inside the Thomasville 10.

Following a defensive pass interference, Albemarle had the ball first and goal at the five-yard line.

Two Corpening runs netted just two yards, so the Blue Dogs decided to bring Autry in as a wide receiver, a move that allows Autry and his 6’6” frame to go up for a high lob pass that few defenders can defend.

Polk’s pass on third down went over Autry’s head and was picked off.

Two plays later, Hinson went off tackle for Thomasville and ran through the Albemarle defense for a 78-yard touchdown run that gave the Red Dogs an 11-point lead.

Forced to throw the ball, Polk would be sacked three times in the last eight minutes on two separate drives.

He would finish the game going 3-of-11 for 46 yards and one interception, with all three of his completions were to wideout Tanarius Blackmon.

Coach Morris talked about his team’s 12-2 season that included winning the Stanly Cup and the Rocky River Conference championship.

“We have had a great year. To go12-2 is a big accomplishment and it gets harder every year. I am proud of our kids,” Morris said.

“We started out on a sad note and we ended on one. Our players will get over tonight and the sun will come up in the morning and they will realize that they had a great year.”
