A chance to honor our veterans

Thursday, May 8, 2014 — Dear Volunteers:

As you know, Memorial Day weekend is approaching and it will be time to put out flags to honor the deceased veterans buried in Stanly County.

We will be placing flags in Fairview and Stanly Gardens on May 24 and leaving them through May 26. Of course, you may choose your own time in placing those you will be putting out in private cemeteries or churches.

A breakfast will be sponsored by VFW 2908 at 119 Anderson Road, Albemarle, starting at 7 a.m. on May 24 for those putting out flags. This breakfast is for all volunteers that will be placing flags on this day before going to the cemeteries, not the general public.

Please check your flags and if you have any that need to be replaced due to being worn and/or faded, let us know. The Veterans Service Office, at the Stanly Commons, has new flags to replace the ones that are unusable; also, if you are in need of an updated burial list for the cemetery you are responsible for, that can be picked up at the same office.

Thank you in advance for giving of your time and energy to help honor the memories of those veterans who once served our country to preserve our freedoms and way of life and have now gone before us.

Sincerely,

Rod Barbee

Stanly County

Veterans Service Officer

  • No easy answers about redistricting

This letter is in response to the article written by Ritchie Starnes in the April 17th issue. I take exception to portions of the article – especially the title, “School Leaders Scoff at Redistricting.”

  • Be nice to a veteran

Charles Plumb was a Navy pilot, who on his 76th combat mission over North Vietnam, was hit by a surface to air missile and had to eject. He parachuted into enemy hands and spent the next six years in the infamous Hanoi Hilton. He survived and now lectures on life’s lessons learned from that ordeal.

  • No ‘Memorial’ in title doesn’t sit well

Born just after World War II, to a war veteran, I grew up in the shadows of uncles and cousins who were WWII vets. Many Saturday nights were spent sitting by the fireplace, listening to their war stories of the places they were sent, what they had to endure and what they witnessed. They are my heroes. It is because of what they and U.S. military veterans since, have or are suffering, that I do what I can for any veteran who calls upon me. They have made me and they drive my life.

  • We are not the bad guy

This letter is for staff writer Ian Faulkner. You do not seem to think the threat from North Korea is serious. Read your history of war. I’m glad that our country takes it serious.
