Yoga not a religion?

Wednesday, October 31, 2012 — I was reading your paper today and noticed an article by Cindy Brewer.

While the article was just fine I think Cindy may have mis-“titled” it.

She writes yoga is not a religion and does some explanations of why she does not consider it a religion, but in the last half of her article she demolishes her story title and her “not a religion” statements by explaining in detail how she communicates with God who is everywhere and in everything.

“I believe that God is everywhere and in everything, so I do feel that meditation is a time for me to listen to God and to find my connection to the universe of which I am one with.”

Hmm, seems I used to read about the pagan beliefs of old where god was in everything.

The trees, the rocks, the earth and the sun to name a few. In fact, you sound a lot like my instructor of ancient Greek mythology from many years ago. The practitioner would do all sorts of things to hear from their god of wine, love, hunt, trees, sun, moon and on and on.

Cindy, you can practice yoga all you want but you really don’t need to say “Yoga is not a religion.”

In all fairness though, everyone with whom I have spoken to about yoga says the same thing.

It is not a religion, it just helps me to relax and get in touch with the trees, the bees, birds and my inner self …

  • Be nice to a veteran

Charles Plumb was a Navy pilot, who on his 76th combat mission over North Vietnam, was hit by a surface to air missile and had to eject. He parachuted into enemy hands and spent the next six years in the infamous Hanoi Hilton. He survived and now lectures on life’s lessons learned from that ordeal.

  • No ‘Memorial’ in title doesn’t sit well

Born just after World War II, to a war veteran, I grew up in the shadows of uncles and cousins who were WWII vets. Many Saturday nights were spent sitting by the fireplace, listening to their war stories of the places they were sent, what they had to endure and what they witnessed. They are my heroes. It is because of what they and U.S. military veterans since, have or are suffering, that I do what I can for any veteran who calls upon me. They have made me and they drive my life.

  • We are not the bad guy

This letter is for staff writer Ian Faulkner. You do not seem to think the threat from North Korea is serious. Read your history of war. I’m glad that our country takes it serious.

  • Respect the graves

As far back as I can remember, as far back as my grandparents could remember there has always been a clump of trees located across from Centerview Church, up on the hill, on the Northeast Connector.
