Larry Douglas Burgess and Ann Hatley Burgess of Oakboro celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary from 3-5 p.m. Sept. 9 at First Baptist Church of Oakboro in Oakboro.
The gala was hosted by Joan H. Hatley, Amanda B. Smith, Denise B. Ross, Leslie H. Murray and Jennifer H. Polzin.
The couple was married on Sept. 7, 1962 in Chesterfield, S.C.
Mrs. Burgess is the daughter of the late Marcus and Lucille Hatley formerly of Oakboro.
Mr. Burgess is the son of the late Lonnie and Dorothy Burgess formerly of Oakboro.
They have two daughters, Amanda B. Smith and husband Alan Wayne Smith and Denise B. Ross and husband Jeff Ross, all of Oakboro.
The couple has three grandchildren, Daniel and Andrew Smith and Dillon Ross.
Mrs. Burgess wore a true navy dress of the same shade and design of the suit in which she was married. The dress was accented with a rhinestone studded pendant, rhinestone jewelry of the same design she wore to their prom and a corsage of yellow roses.
Mr. Burgess sported a boutonniere of yellow roses.
The dining tables were adorned with sprays of fall flowers in yellow, orange and burgundy as well as family photos of the couple, their children, grandchildren and extended family.
The memorabilia table included photos of the couple throughout the past 50 years, vintage albums from the 1950s, toys from their childhood, yearbooks from Oakboro School, wedding photos of their children and aprons worn by the Mrs. Burgess’ mother and grandmothers.
Mrs. Burgess’ original wedding suit was displayed along with the mother of the bride dresses she wore to each of her daughter’s weddings. A vintage suit jacket worn by Mr. Burgess in 1950 at his sister’s wedding was also displayed.
A cupcake cake with assorted flavors including Sundrop, carrot, red velvet, chocolate, Orange Crush and strawberry was served as well as a 50th anniversary cake for the couple to enjoy at home.
Along with the cupcake tree, other sweet treats included heirloom desserts made from recipes handed down through the generations from the Hatley and Burgess families. The desserts included persimmon pudding, icebox pudding, hello dolly bars, banana pudding, fudge and strawberry delight pudding cake.
Along with the desserts, the guests enjoyed barbecued meatballs, pigs in blankets, vegetable trays, fruit bowls, cheese trays and anniversary punch.
Amy Boger, a friend of the family, served the cake.
Rachel McCullough, an-other friend of the family, served the punch.
Daniel B. Smith, grandson of the couple, attended the register.
Others who assisted were Joyce Little, Betty Huneycutt and members of the couple’s church family at First Baptist Church of Oakboro.
Approximately 150 guests from across the state joined the couple in their celebration.
