A car accident Saturday afternoon claimed the lives of two young people in Stanly.

New London resident Matthew Heun, 21, and his fiancé, 18-year-old Mackenzie Kinley, died when their gray Toyota struck another vehicle along N.C. Highway 740, between Albemarle and Badin.

According to the N.C. Highway Patrol, the Toyota was traveling northbound on N.C. 740 heading to Badin at an estimated speed of 85 miles per hour (in a 55) near Guard Road. The car lost control, crossed the center line and collided with the left rear side of a box truck traveling southbound, Highway Patrol reported. The vehicle continued off the road, striking an embankment and several trees.

Both Heun and Kinley, who were wearing seatbelts, were pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver and passenger of the other vehicle were not injured.

A funding page started this weekend on Facebook to help the families with funeral costs.
