Ten years of work at the Stanly County Register of Deeds paid off for Suzanne Lowder in the primary election Tuesday evening.
With 3,184 votes, Lowder came out on top over Tanya Barbee’s 1,530 vote count and will take the place of current Register of Deeds Cecil Almond following his retirement in December.
“Now I can take a deep breath,” Lowder said after she stated the surprise she felt when she realized she had won.
“I’ve never done anything like this before. I was so amazed.”
As the Register of Deeds, Lowder is a custodian of public records such as deeds, deed of trust, power of attorney, maps, uniform commercial codes and birth, death and marriage records. She will also issue marriage licenses, administer oaths to notaries, military discharges and many others.
Lowder serves as the deputy register 3 of deeds for Stanly County. In addition, she has six years experience with the Stanly County Board of Social Service, four years with the board of directors at Encounter Christ Church and three years with the Crisis Council Board.
“We’re going to let things go as they are,” Lowder said.”
Even with Lowder taking the position as Register of Deeds, her position will be vacant, which will put strain on the office, she said.
“It’s a small office so when one person is out, it’s rough on everyone,” she added.
“I just want to thank all the people who supported me. I was just surprised I got the vote in.”
