Locust City Council voted Thursday night to allow the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) to install a sidewalk along N.C. 200.
The sidewalk would extend along the east side of N.C. 200 between Market Street and Lions Club Drive.
“I approached DOT about the sidewalk because I was concerned with the (N.C.) 200 corridor because we have several residents that walk through there to come to town,” said City Administrator James Inman.
NCDOT agreed to install the sidewalk, which would initially cost the city $100,000 plus engineering costs, but the $100,000 would be reimbursed.
Inman expects the engineering costs to be less than $1,000, providing no utility poles need to be relocated.
“There is the concern about one pole, but DOT agreed to divert the sidewalk around the pole,” Inman said.
He also said he would look into further funding for the project through the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).
Also during the meeting:
n Faye and Ronald Love of Griffin Hill Road in Locust spoke to the council about the condition of their road. Inman and Councilman Larry Baucom agreed the road needed repaired, but they were concerned about the lack of a right-of-way.
Inman said he would continue to research the situation.
n Judy Godwin, a member of the Locust Historical Society and Museum’s board of directors requested the council consider a donation similar to the $1,000 donated last year.
n Godwin also announced a new exhibit was on display at the Stanly Community College (SCC) Crutchfield Campus in Locust. The display includes items from the 1969 centennial celebration in Locust.
n Former Councilman Harry Fletcher spoke during the public comment period to thank the council for their years of service together.
“I want to take this time to tell everyone how much I’ve enjoyed working with them on the council. And I want to thank the citizens for allowing me the opportunity to serve,” Fletcher said.
