Downtown Badin business owners have new resource

Thursday, May 15, 2008 — Merchants in downtown Badin can now get more bang for their buck when working to improve storefront appearances.

The Town of Badin Main Street Facade Improvement Program, a new resource approved by the town’s council Tuesday night, will allow business owners to clean, fix, polish and shine their shops for half what it would have cost prior to the program.

Funded through a $250,000 economic enhancement grant from the Alcoa Foundation and administered by the North Carolina Rural Center, the facade improvement grants are dollar for dollar matching grants aimed at local business enhancement.

They will be awarded through application approvals and will be available over a two-year period, drawing from a $25,000 fund balance set aside specifically for facade improvement.

The minimum amount to apply for is $500 and the maximum amount is $5,000, so business owners can double their results when spending $250 to $2,500.

City officials believe the funds will accommodate all the downtown businesses’ facade needs, although some won’t need as much as others.

“There is enough money available to lend assistance to every business in town,” Badin Town Manager Todd Herms said.

“Some of our businesses completed facade improvements before the program was started and some are in positions of greater need than others, so we anticipate some applications to come in for less than the full $5,000 amount.”

For the purposes of the program, a facade is defined as any one side of a building regardless of the number of floors or stories.

And while each storefront can be considered a facade, priority will be given to the front faces of applicant buildings, many of which are brick.

For that reason, brick cleaning will be one aspect of the grant program that is detailed with specific guidelines.

The method merchants intend to use for brick work must be approved prior to being started due to the possibility of original and historic facade damage with some methods.

Likewise, paint options and colors will be considered prior to fund approval.

All applicants are encouraged to seek the services of the State Historic Preservation Office at (252) 830-6580 before application completion and design plans are finalized.

Facade improvement grants will be available for application July 1.
