Parker turns case over to special prosecutor

Thursday, June 8, 2006 — Michael Parker, 20th Prosecutorial District Attorney, is turning over the case centered on his former boss and a coworker to a special prosecutor.

Media reports today say that Parker has asked that a special prosecutor determine if charges should be brought against former 20th District Attorney Ken Honeycutt and former assistant DA Scott Brewer in a case that put a convicted murderer on death row.

The move will sidestep criticism that Parker, who worked with the pair, was recommended for the job by Honeycutt. Additionally, Parker apparently contributed to both lawyers’ campaigns when they ran for office and his office will retry Jonathan Hoffman, the accused, later this year. Parker is also seeking election this fall.

Earlier this year, the North Carolina Bar Association’s disciplinary committee dropped complaints of misconduct against the pair because of a statute of limitations, but found there was evidence of obstruction of justice and subordination of perjury in the case.

The case was turned back over to Parker and on March 29, according to press reports, he requested the assistance of investigators at the State Bureau of Investigation.

Parker requested the special prosectors after his own investigation, according to the North Carolina Administrative Office of the Courts.
