Fork Farm has role in Olympic selection process

Thursday, July 17, 2008 — The United States Equestrian Association has named the horse/rider combinations for the 2008 US Olympic Team in Eventing. These combinations, pending approval from the US Olympic Committee, will represent the United States at the 2008 Olympic Games, the equestrian portion of which will be in Hong Kong beginning Aug. 8.

Following a final selection process at The Fork in Norwood last weekend, the following riders and horses were selected:

• Phillip Dutton, 44, of West Grove, Pa., with Connaught, 15, an Irish Sport Horse owned by Bruce Duchossois;

• Becky Holder, 39, of Mendota Heights, Minn., with Courageous Comet, 12, a Thoroughbred owned by Becky and Thomas Holder Jr.;

• Gina Miles, 34, of Creston, Calif., with McKinlaigh, 14, an Irish Sport Horse owned by Gina Miles, Laura Coats and Thomas Schulz;

• Heidi White, 42, of Aiken, S.C., with Northern Spy, 15, an English Thoroughbred owned by Heidi White.

Replacements are:

• Bruce Davidson Jr., 32, of Ocala, Fla., with BallyNoe Castle R M, 8, an Irish Thoroughbred owned by Carl and Cassandra Segal;

• Phillip Dutton, 44, of West Grove, Pa., with Woodburn, 13, a Thoroughbred owned by Acorn Hill Farm;

• Bonnie Mosser, 45, of Unionville, Pa., with Merloch, 11, a New Zealand Thoroughbred Cross owned by Bonnie Mosser and Margaret Egan;

• Karen O’Connor, 50, of The Plains, Va., with Mandiba, 9, an Irish Thoroughbred owned by Joan Goswell.

The horses in the U.S. were to ship Thursday to England, where they will join McKinlaigh, Poggio and Mandiba. These horses will enter quarantine on July 22 and ship to Hong Kong for the Olympic Games on July 30.

Ten of the 15 horses and riders in contention for the Olympics were present at The Fork last weekend for team selectors to judge one last time, according to Rebecca Howard, equestrian director at The Fork. The other five riders and horses were in England, which was the other option for a final outing.

The horses competed in dressage, cross country and show jumping, Howard said.

“The horses are looked at to see which ones are the soundest,” Howard said.

“All the horses were thoroughly looked over by the three different vets.”

Howard continued: “The Fork was the destination because of the quality of facilities here. The footing in the arenas, the beautiful cross country course and the fact that here at the Fork even in July we can prepare good footing for the horses on the cross country course.
