Organization raises funds through softball game

By Sarah Jane Rosser, Staff Writer

Tuesday, July 22, 2008 A charity softball game brought residents to Norwood Memorial Park Sunday.

Approximately 150 community members and supporters gathered to enjoy the hot summer day out at the ballpark for a good cause.

The Community Who Cares program has kicked off its summer charity softball event to raise money to support the community by making concessions available as well as donations.

President Grover Shankle said the event was the third game they’ve conducted this summer. They are looking forward to more support in the future.

“We are a pipeline of information to the community and we build a support system for residents,” Shankle said.

Business owners are key in the organization and they receive support from members. Many owners have joined the cause to support the community as well as gain more business for their organizations in the process.

“We try to build loyalty to them by getting out and supporting their businesses,” Shankle said.

The softball game brought in approximately $280 Sunday which will be used for families who need the financial support and to help support neighborhood programs.

Town Administrator Dwight Smith is happy to have a committee in Norwood that puts the needs of community members before its own.

“It’s a local organization that is trying to promote the community and provide services to people who are in need. They are also trying to enhance the community by clean ups and so forth,” Smith said.

“I feel like it is a good organization and we thank them for what they’ve already done.”

The nonprofit organization’s members are committed to telling people about the program and their efforts in the community.

“Everyone had a great time,” Shankle said.

“We invite anyone who is willing to play or support local families to come and join us on Sunday.”

Those interested in getting involved can contact Shankle at (704) 474-7280 or Chairman of Communications Albert Rush at (704) 474-3351.
