Early College students back to the books

By Sarah Jane Rosser, Staff Writer

Thursday, August 7, 2008 Stanly Early College High School (SEC) welcomed freshmen Monday with an orientation event to include team building activities, a campus-wide scavenger hunt and a meet and greet with the faculty and staff.

This year’s orientation had the best attendance yet. Each student came and participated in events that began at 9 a.m. Students became familiar with the Stanly Community College (SCC) Campus as well as its teachers.

Each rising ninth grader received a summer reading assignment which was turned in Monday morning when they first arrived to the orientation. They continued the day with team building and a scavenger hunt before hearing presentations from SEC staff.

SEC Counselor Joyce Hansen said she was pleased to see that every student turned in all their work.

“They are showing a lot of promise,” she said.

“Overall, we thought it went very well.”

Forty-four new students will join SEC, making their their year in existence a success. Each year, the class sizes continue to grow and the added 44 students will give SEC 118 students in all three classes.

SEC students officially began the school year Thursday, starting a week earlier than SCC students in order to get acclimated with the campus. The new freshman class will take primarily high school courses whereas sophomores and juniors will finish up their high school classes and beginning their college courses.

“In five years, students will have a high school diploma and a two-year associates degree from SCC,” Hansen said.

SEC officials said they anticipate most of the students will transfer to universities. During their sophomore year, an informed decision seminar is given to help students choose their degree pathway with SCC and find a career field they want to enter.

Between Sept. 19 and Dec. 12, Hansen conducts visits to all Stanly County Schools that have eighth-grade classes to speak with students about the opportunities available. Letters are sent home to parents to also keep them informed of what is offered.

Informational forums are conducted each year as well to answer questions about the program. The public meetings are schedule for Nov. 6 and Feb. 5, 2009.

“I just wish we could get more parents aware of our program,” Hansen said.

“We have a unique group of students and there is a lot of bonding that takes place.”

The students are dropped off around 8:20 a.m. and leave at 4:25 p.m., which makes for a long day. Students are taking all honors courses as well as college courses to put toward their associates degree with SCC and perhaps more schooling at a university in the future.

“It pulls them together more so on a small campus than a large high school campus,” Hansen said.

“They are all in it together and they help each other a lot.”

Hansen said President Dr. Mike Taylor has been more than welcoming of the early college students and staff.

“He’s a huge part of our program,” she said.

“He’s seen in the hallways, he speaks to our students and he even knows some of their names. It’s nice to have such support from the college.”

While the early college students bond together, they also take courses with the traditional college student at SCC.

Hansen said they open up and ask a lot of questions.

“The instructors say it’s adding a new fresh dimension to have students in classes asking questions and offering help,” she said.

SEC finished the 2007-2008 school year with a 97.6 percent attendance rate and 20 percent of students achieved perfect attendance.

Thirty-one percent of students were on the honor roll and 65 percent of SEC students who took college classes received a “B” or better in their classes.

SEC was also one of two high schools in the county to achieve Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) last year.

Three new staff members joined the team this year to continue success.

Applications can be obtained from all eighth-grade counselors or visit the SEC Web site at www.echs.scs.k12.nc.us.

Applications will be accepted started Feb. 2, 2009.
