Albemarle High institutes Freshman Academy

Tuesday, August 26, 2008 Freshmen began arriving at Albemarle High School at 8 a.m. Aug. 21. While this may sound unimpressive, they still had four days before school began.

These freshmen were attending the first Freshman Academy Orientation. The Freshman Academy program kicked off its orientation with welcoming words from Georgia Harvey, the academy coordinator, Principal Dave Bright and administrators Karen Nixon and Danny Poplin.

The emphasis for the morning was on the high standards that the freshmen are expected to rise to.

The participants were also briefed on daily high school life, including buses, absences, dress code and the student code of conduct.

Sandra Pollard, guidance counselor, briefed the students on planning ahead for their remaining three years, striving to do their best and setting goals for their success. Carol Sasser, media specialist, then informed the students about the VISA (very important students of Albemarle) program, media center and technology regulations.

Student Body President JJ Harris and other upperclassmen spoke to the ninth graders about the importance of getting involved in clubs, athletics and academic competitions. Later, they helped the freshmen with their activities for the remainder of the day. These included circulating through their class schedules, meeting their new teachers and then competing in a school-wide scavenger hunt designed to familiarize the freshmen with AHS.

The reminder of the day consisted of team building activities led by the Freshman Academy teachers. Students wrapped up the day at AHS with a question and answer session, received “Class of 2012” Bulldog T-shirts and had prize drawings.

Albemarle High School administration formed a team of teachers last year to research and study schools that showed success with the concept of Freshman Academy Smaller Learning Communities. Much planning and work was done during the summer to prepare AHS’s Freshman Academy for the incoming freshmen class.

Why the need for Freshman Academy?

Transitional research found that students moving from eighth grade to ninth grade had statistically dropped in the following areas of self-perception: self-worth, academic achievement, behavior and attendance.

Nationally, more students fail the ninth grade than any other grade. Students who repeat at least one year are three times more likely to drop out of school than students who have not failed a grade. Among 14-15-year-old students who struggle with basic reading and math skills, 20 percent drop out of school within two years.

“Our mission is to create a supportive environment in which all ninth grade students will successfully transition into the high school setting,” said Georgia Harvey.

“We want our freshman to experience academic success. We also want to encourage our freshman students to be actively involved in the school community.”

The goals of the Freshman Academy are:

1. Increase proficiency rate in tested and non-tested areas.

2. Increase graduation rate.

3. Increase positive attendance trends.

4. Increase involvement in school activities.

5. Increase responsible behavior.

AHS Freshman Academy students will attend the majority of their classes in the freshman hallway and take their first-year core courses over their first two semesters. Freshman students will also be assigned to second lunch this year. This lunch period will be for Freshman Academy students only.
