Storm rains cause flooded roads

By Dexter Hinson, Staff Writer

Thursday, August 28, 2008 Driving precautions and flood warnings were heard all over the airwaves earlier this week as rain fell each day, causing several occurrences of high water related impediments across Stanly County and surrounding areas.

According to Stanly County Emergency Management, officials watched low-lying bridges and secondary roads. Every at-risk area is above water, and crews were to clean debris sometime between Thursday and Friday.

Stanly County Airport reports rainfall totals, printed at midnight each day, as follows: 1.81” (Wed.); 1.72 (Tues.); .11 (Mon.)

The North Carolina Department of Transportation still has barricades on the following roads: Hartsell, Bridgeport, Flint Ridge, Old Mill, Rogers, Booger Hollar and Sides in Albemarle; Hill-Ford in Oakboro; Gold Branch in Richfield; and Reeves Island near Misenheimer.

Gov. Mike Easley directed North Carolina damage assessment teams to areas flooded by remains of Tropical Storm Fay on Wednesday. Teams were to assess damage in Cabarrus and Mecklenburg counties, as well as some parts of the mountains and western Piedmont.

“Even though most of the rain is past, there is still a chance of flash flooding in low-lying areas near rivers and creeks, so people need to be aware of their surroundings and heed the warnings of local emergency officials,” Easley said Wednesday.

“Never drive on flooded roads or allow children to play in flood waters. Just a few inches of water can sweep a person off their feet and it takes less than a foot of water to float a car.”

According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, the forecast for Thursday was to be scattered showers and thunderstorms, with a high near 84. Chance of precipitation was 50 percent.

New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts from possible thunderstorms, were projected.

The chance of showers and thunderstorms was to continue Thursday night, staying mostly cloudy, with a low around 67. Chance of precipitation was 20 percent.

Friday’s forecast included a slight chance of showers, with thunderstorms possible after noon and areas of fog before 10 a.m. Chance of precipitation was projected to keep steady at 20 percent throughout Friday, with a high near 88 and low around 68.

Weather forecasters predict a slight chance of rain early Saturday, with a chance of showers and thunderstorms after noon. Staying mostly cloudy, with a high near 90, the chance of precipitation for Saturday was set at 30 percent. The possibility of showers and storms continues into Saturday night, with a 30 percent chance of precipitation and a low of 68.
