Board receives updates on school construction

By Sarah Jane Rosser, Staff Writer

Thursday, September 4, 2008 Construction updates and projects are still in the works, with Locust and Aquadale elementaries and Albemarle High School.

Albemarle High School will soon see some progress on a new physical education facility, pending a recommendation from the finance and facilities committees.

Randy Baker of Pennacle Architecture presented three floor plans to Stanly County School Board members Tuesday evening, however, the proposal will be taken back to the facilities committee and finance committee upon request of board members Melvin Poole and Mike Barbee.

The first plan discussed will be a free standing building and contain two locker rooms, team locker rooms, two toilet areas, a weight room, training room, a laundry area, a storage area and a dressing room for officials.

The proposed 5,700-square-foot building will be an all brick facade with a metal frame and roof. Estimated cost is $798,893.

Baker said after he met with school officials at Albemarle High, another floor plan was drawn out to include three locker rooms, showers, toilets, an office, training room, whirlpools and a weight room. The building would be half brick facade with metal siding, a metal roof and frame.

The estimated total for that plan will be $773,385.

A third plan would consist of renovations to the existing locker rooms, an upgrade to the shower area as well as a free-standing facility.

Baker said estimates could go up or down depending on gas prices.

Poole and Barbee requested the proposals for the project to be sent back to the facilities and finance committees for further discussion before making a recommendation to the board.

Project coordinator Dale Collingwood has been giving updates at each meeting for projects at Locust and Aquadale and said things seem to be going according to plan.

All demolition for Locust has been completed as well as utilities and sedimentation work. A water line will be placed parallel to N.C. 24-27 for a minimum cost. The septic tank has been taken out and a completed building pad started Wednesday morning.

Aquadale is a little further behind with construction, however, water lines and utilities are done with the exception of a gas line into the cafeteria which should be up and running by the end of the week.

The 10,000 gallon underground storage tank was taken out with no contamination to deal with. The 1,000 gallon tank was also taken out with minimal contamination.

Collingwood said footing work should start within the next two weeks.

Poole asked Collingwood if the contingency fund still looked good after money had been taken out to fix unseen problems. Collingwood said they are still well under contingency budget.
