Fresh House featured on ‘Roy’s Folks’

Sunday, September 21, 2008 — The Fresh House, at 805 W. Main St., Locust, was recently featured on a local Fox News Show.

“Roy’s Folks,” a show that airs on Fox 8 in High Point, filmed a segment that was seen on the show last week.

“This is the kind of thing people love to see. It’s something that is down home and local,” said Roy Ackland, host of “Roy’s Folks.”

David Hinson, owner of the Fresh House, took Ackland and Cameraman David Weatherly on a tour of the restaurant and gift shop and then Ackland interviewed him.

Filming started on Sept. 10 with a shot of Hinson working at the homemade ice cream maker that sits on the front porch of the restaurant.

The filming then moved inside, where Weatherly chatted with Hinson in the kitchen area while Hinson made several loaves of his famous sour dough bread.

“This is outstanding. I can’t believe all the stuff they make here,” Ackland said.

“Homemade is what we’re all about,” Hinson replied.

Hinson was then interviewed, where he explained how the Fresh House came to be and why it is in its present location.

Ackland said his show, “Roy’s Folks,” airs Monday and Wednesday evenings at 5:55 p.m. and then again the following morning at 7:55 a.m.

He also said there is a complete archive of previous shows on the station’s Web site at www.foxwghp.com under the news tab on the right-hand side of the page.

Ackland has worked on “Roy’s Folks” for approximately 20 years after first working on the morning show.

“I’ve got it made. I love my job, but I had to start out by getting up at 3:30 a.m. everyday,” Ackland said.

Ackland and Weatherly have travelled to many places to find inspiration for their show.

Ackland said they’ve been known to go to Florida and Louisiana to cover stories.

But he’s never had a show that, in his opinion, was better than the others.

“We’ve done thousands of shows and there was never a bad one. We had one or two that we didn’t edit because something was wrong with the information so it didn’t air, but the shows we’ve done have all been good,” Ackland said.

Ackland said he gives the credit of the success of the show to Weatherly.

“David does everything. He films the shots and edits it. I’m nothing but a pretty face,” Ackland joked.
