Hayes announces $500,000 for airport

Sunday, November 18, 2007 — Congressman Robin Hayes (NC-8) has announced that he has secured $500,000 in federal funding for improvements at the Stanly County Airport.

This new funding will be provided as part of the FY 2008 Departments of Transportation, and Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act Conference Report, which passed through the House. The Conference Report must now pass in the Senate and signed by the President to become a law. Hayes noted that improved infrastructure is a critical component of economic development.

“I am pleased to announce that this important funding for Stanly County,” said Hayes.

“An improved airport is critical to economic development and a better quality of life. Better transportation infrastructure will lead to an easing of traffic congestion and ultimately means more jobs and more opportunities in Stanly County and across the 8th District. I want to thank all our local leaders — private and public sector alike - who have worked so hard to improve this facility and make it into a tremendous asset for Stanly County.”

Stanly County Airport Authority has identified priority improvement projects that are vital to comply with FAA regulations and maintain the safe and efficient operation of the facility.

These projects include obstruction removal to facilitate safe approaches for arriving aircraft on both ends of the primary runway, land acquisition to protect from encroachments, and new taxi-lanes with improved access roads to serve new hangars.

Obstruction removal will lower terrain that will interfere with the new radar facility acquired by the North Carolina Air National Guard.

The obstacle located on the approach end of Runway 22 Left and Right will displace the runway touchdown zone by 1,300 feet when utilizing the radar’s precision approach capability. This prevents a coincidental approach with the Instrument Landing System (ILS).

Additionally, this project will allow for tree and brush removal on property that currently harbors an abundance of wildlife that present a collision hazard with aircraft

The acquisition of additional land is required for the protection of the runway approaches to Runway 4 Right & Left. Acquisition of this property will allow the airport to remove and relocate one occupied dwelling from the approach end of Runway 4 Right and Left.

Taxi lane expansion and road improvements are required to provide corporate tenants access to existing and new hangars scheduled to be constructed.

Current utility systems supporting the recent hangar area expansion and need to be upgraded to support increased utility demands and correct safety deficiencies.

The President has issued a veto threat over FY 2008 Departments of Transporta-tion, and Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act, but Hayes said he would fight against the veto because the funding for Stanly County is
