Stanly Regional receives ‘A’ for patient safety

Wednesday, December 5, 2012 — Stanly Regional Medical Center was honored with an “A” Hospital Safety Score by The Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit run by employers and other large purchasers of health benefits. The A score was awarded in the latest update to the Hospital Safety Score, the A, B, C, D or F scores assigned to U.S. hospitals based on preventable medical errors, injuries, accidents and infections. The Hospital Safety Score was compiled under the guidance of the nation’s leading experts on patient safety and is designed to give the public information they can use to protect themselves and their families.

“Stanly Regional is always looking at ways to improve patient safety and this rating confirms our commitment to our patients,” said Margaret Rudisill, RN, director of Quality for Stanly Regional.

“A good example is our recent implementation of computerized physician order entry (CPOE).  Among its many advantages, CPOE reduces medication errors as well as errors made in transcribing physician orders.”

“Hospitals like this that earn an A have demonstrated their commitment to their patients and their community,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group.

“I congratulate Stanly Regional for its safety excellence and look forward to the day when all hospitals will match this standard.”

Rudisill suggests when choosing a hospital, consider a variety of factors such as speaking with your physician about your individual care plan and by looking up safety and quality information for our region and state.  She adds that every hospital’s mission is to ensure that patients receive the right care at the right time in the right place.
