Civitan of the Year award goes to SCC instructor

Tuesday, October 16, 2012 — Christy Hopkins, Early Childhood instructor for Stanly Community College (SCC), recently received the Civitan of the Year Award.

Civitans have been helping their communities since 1917. The main focus of Civitan is helping people with disabilities, but members help retirement communities, homeless shelters and anywhere there is a need.

The five local clubs include; Cabarrus, Faith, Granite Quarry, Richfield and Rockwell. The N.C. District West Civitan’s motto this year is “Civitan Passion Speaks with Action, Positive Energy Drives.”

Hopkins helps with Stanly County Special Olympics and is the Richfield Civitan Club’s liaison to the North Stanly Junior Civitans. She is on the Relay for Life committee and will be organizing the Kids’ Walk for 2013’s event.

Hopkins is currently serving as N.C. District West Civitan Fundraising chair and president of CRSaeyc (Cabarrus, Rowan, Stanly Association for the Education of Young Children).

She is also an Early Childhood Club advisor and will be in charge of crafts for the children at the seventh annual Fall Festival & Kids Costume Parade to be from 4-6 p.m. Oct. 30 in Albemarle.

“Civitans touch the lives of many folks within many communities across the world. It is an honor and privilege to be a part of such a caring organization. The Civitan Creed is a great role-model to follow,” Hopkins said.
