Safe Kids Stanly County offers safety tips for land, water

Thursday, May 23, 2013 — In honor of National Kids Safety Day, Safe Kids Stanly County had a Safe Kids Day Saturday morning in front of All 4 Fun Inflatables in Albemarle. The event was from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and featured an array of informational services provided by volunteers from different organizations from around the county who are a part of the Safe Kids Stanly County Coalition.

Tammy Albertson with the Safe Kids Coalition took some time to explain what was happening that day.

“We’re one of the oldest coalitions in North Carolina and we’ve been with them since ’92,” Albertson said.

“This is a group of community agencies, organizations that come together and we focus on specific safety areas. Our target safety areas are child passenger safety, water safety, bicycle safety and fire prevention.”

She said they had limited resources and that they apply for grants through the state. Typically the grants are for specific areas, such as water safety.

“We just got a $400 grant for bike helmets. Whatever the grant is for, we have to focus in that target area,” she said.

“People can make donations. This is one avenue they can use to provide resources for the youngsters in the community.”

Some of the agencies that have partnered with Safe Kids Stanly County and were present at the event were Butterfly House, Stanly County Health De-partment, Alcoa, Albemarle Parks & Recreation,  Albe-marle Police Department, Albemarle Fire Department, Stanly County EMS, Friendly Chevrolet, Stanly County Department of Social Services and Stanly County  Partnership for Children.

“Those are just the agencies represented here today; we have lots of others,” Albertson said.

Albemarle Fire Depart-ment put on a display educating how to use a fire extinguisher. Participants were allowed to shoot cups from their perches using the extinguishers.

The EXPLORE Team, along with Albemarle Police Department and EMS, had a display to show how hot the inside of a car could get.

Alberton said one could make s’mores in the hot vehicles, but the weather was cool on Saturday and didn’t allow for such a demonstration.

In addition to Alcoa giving free life jackets to children who attended the event, Parks & Recreation’s Oliver Webster was outfitting kids with bicycle helmets.

There were also certified inspection teams doing checks on children’s car seats, to ensure proper installation and usage.

“This was our first event. We’ve had good attendance, we were pleased,” Albert-son said.

“Like we say, if you’ve helped one kid it was worth your time.”
