Art explodes into life at Falling Rivers Gallery

By Marina Shankle, Staff Writer

Tuesday, July 30, 2013 — The works of local and regional artists are on display at Falling Rivers Gallery, 119 W. Main St., Albemarle, as part of the annual Summer Art Explosion Show.

These works of art are divided into four categories: two-dimensional art, three-dimensional art, unaltered photography and altered photography.

Artist Walter Stanford, of Kannapolis, served as judge for the show, naming winners and honorable mentions in each category.

Stanford creates his own artwork using a variety of mediums, such as oil, acrylic, pastel and digital media. The subjects of his art are as varied as his mediums and include landscapes, animals and fantasy and whimsical scenes. He received a Regional Artist Project Grant from the N.C. Arts Council in 2009 for his series of paintings of farms in N.C.

“He’s a very accomplished artist,” said Anita Ammerman, of the Stanly Arts Guild.

This year’s show went very well, Ammerman said.

“We’ve been doing this show for at least 15 years. We love this every year,” she said.

“We invite artists from all around the surrounding counties, and this year, we had 29 artists. That’s not a record, but it’s a good turnout. We had 80 pieces of artwork.”

The art show is a good way to network and meet fellow artists from other areas, Ammerman said.

“I enjoyed seeing the wonderful variation and different kinds of art. When you think you’ve seen it all, that’s when you see something you’ve never thought about,” she said.

“You see that people can create some beautiful things.”

The Best of Show award went to Jennie Tomlin for her watercolor painting “Blue on Blue.”
