SCC to offer entrepreneurial certificate in the fall

Sunday, July 21, 2013 — Stanly Community College (SCC) plans to offer a new entrepreneurial certificate program this fall. The program can be completed in two semesters and is designed to bring Stanly County into the 21st century business environment.

According to the Kauffmann Foundation, new businesses add an average of three million jobs in their first year, whereas, older companies lose one million jobs annually. This has created an emphasis on small business and job creation through entrepreneurship.

“These statistics are too important to ignore, and SCC has committed to providing the tools necessary to individuals who not only want to start their own business, but are looking for the independence of entrepreneurship,” said Dr. Brenda Kays, president of Stanly Community College.

SCC studied what other schools were doing and created its certificate program based on the needs of Stanly County. The 17-credit hour program includes two existing classes, Introduction to Business and Principles of Financial Accounting; two new classes, Introduction to Entrepreneurship and Entrepreneurship Marketing (vital for small business); and a REAL Small Business class (an activity based, hands-on comprehensive class) as a capstone to the certificate.

For more on the certificate program, contact Tom George, director of Small Business and Entrepreneurial Development, at (704) 991-0182 or email tgeorge5857@stanly.edu.
